Wisconsin QB Bevell leaves hospital

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin quarterback Darrell Bevell left the hospital in a wheelchair Wednesday, four days after being carted from the stadium with a lacerated kidney and internal bleeding.

"That's not the way I thought my career would end," Bevell said. "But I can be proud that I gave everything that I had. I couldn't have left any more on the field than I did."

X-rays of the ribs, taken in the locker room, were negative. A CAT scan at University Hospital disclosed the more serious injuries.

Bevell, a senior who holds at least 17 school passing records, said his problems at Saturday's home game against Illinois started after a hit on a second-quarter pass play. He was prone on the field for several moments before being helped to the sidelines.

He was closely monitored by a medical team at the sidelines as he endured repeated hits from Illini defenders.

Believing that bruised ribs were the cause of the problem, Bevell and the medical staff decided he could continue playing, but the intensity of the pain finally caused Bevell to remove himself with about three minutes to play. The game ended 3-3.
