A Layton boy and Millcreek girl died Wednesday in separate traffic accidents.
Killed were:Sergio Gambino, 8, Layton.
Ashley Wardle, 14, Millcreek.
Gambino died after being thrown into the windshield of the car he was riding when it struck a pickup truck turning into the parking lot of North Layton Junior High School.
Layton Police reported the boy suffered severe cuts to his neck after his head went through the windshield in the 3:36 p.m. accident at 1100 West and 2000 North. He was airlifted to Primary Children's Medical Center and died shortly after, police said.
Gambino was riding in a car driven by Mauricio H. Treto, 24, Layton, which struck the side of a pickup truck driven by Anthony A. Marchese, 28, also of Layton, according to police.
Police said Marchese was stopped while eastbound on 2000 North, waiting to turn into the junior high school parking lot. When the oncoming traffic stopped to allow Marchese to turn, Treto apparently began passing the line of stopped cars in front of him on the right at what police describe as a high rate of speed.
He ran into Marchese's turning truck, pushing it into a third car waiting to pull out of the parking lot, police said.
Treto was treated at Davis North Hospital and discharged, police said, and Marchese and the driver of the third car, Orona S. Young, 51, Layton, suffered only minor injuries.
No citation has been issued in the accident, according to police.
Wardle died Wednesday after she apparently darted into traffic on 1300 South and was hit by a van.
Authorities are still investigating the accident but say the teen deliberately ran into the busy street at 3967 S. 1300 East about 6 p.m.
She was struck by a Toyota van driven by a woman, 19.
"It doesn't look like there was anything the driver could do to prevent the accident," said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Potter.
Wardle was taken to St. Mark's Hospital, where she was declared dead.
