Child magazine selected 11 books for its fifth annual book awards for "Excellence in Family Issues."
The books were selected by specialists in pediatric health, education, family therapy and child psychology, in conjunction with the magazine's editors. Among those selected as "The Best Parenting Books of 1995" are:- Parenting: "The Challenging Child" by Dr. Stanley Greenspan (Addison-Wesley, $23).
- First Person: "The Blue Jay's Dance: A Birth Year" by Louise Erdrich (HarperCollins, $21).
- Education: "How to Talk So Kids Can Learn" by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish (Rawson Associates, $22).
- Family Dynamics: "From One Child to Two" by Judy Dunn (Fawcett Columbine, $10) and "Growing With Your Child: Reflections on Parent Development" by Elin Schoen (Doubleday, $21).
- Health: "Complete Baby and Child Care" by Dr. Miriam Stoppard (Dorling Kindersley, $29.95) and "Caring for Your School-Age Child" edited by Dr. Edward L. Schor (Bantam, $29.95).
- Ethics, Morals and Values: "A Call to Character" edited by Colin Greer and Herbert Kohl (Harper-Collins, $25) and "A Prayer for Children" by Ina Hughs (William Morrow, $18.95).
- Hall of Fame: "P.E.T.: Parent Effectiveness Training" by Dr. Thomas Gordon (Plume, $11.95) and "Gesell Institute of Human Development" series (Dell, $10.95).
The nominating panel and judges were Dr. Marjorie Hogan, instructor of pediatrics, University of Minnesota; Wendy London, principal of The Early Childhood Center, Yonkers, N.Y.; Linda Seaver, family therapist in Bedford Village, N.Y.; and William Sobesky, associate clinical professor of psychiatry, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
