Santa's almost ready to hop in the sleigh. And thanks to generous volunteers, he's managed to put together gifts for most of the good little boys and girls.
But through some sort of mix-up, he didn't get around to everyone on his list. Dozens of children are waiting to be adopted for Christmas through the Angel Tree program, co-sponsored by the Salvation Army and KUTV Ch. 2.Volunteers are asked to pick an "angel" from the tree and provide a toy or two. But with time so short, Salvation Army's Jim Burt, who manages the program for Santa, hopes people will drop off new toys to the distribution center, 423 W. 300 South, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday. Families whose children were approved as angels can pick up gifts at the center during the same hours.
A few families still need adopting through the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune Sub for Santa program. During the final week before Christmas, families sometimes are turned back. Gifts might include toys, a few items of clothing and, in some cases, food for a holiday meal. Call 237-2180.
The U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program also continues to collect new toys, which can be dropped at Smith's Food and Drug centers.
