It took a letter from his hero to get a Colin Powell supporter to end a five-week vigil spent in a recliner in a public park.
The Powell supporter, who goes by the name CaShears, had spent all his time in Leimert Park since Nov. 12, except for a couple of nights of bad weather. He was hoping to persuade the retired general to reconsider his decision not to run for president.CaShears ended his vigil Monday after receiving a fax from Powell asking him to respect his decision not to run.
"He said it's final. I believe him," CaShears said. "If he had not sent the fax, I would've been here for Christmas."
The letter, faxed to the nearby Colin Powell for President office, was delivered to the park Friday.
"I am moved that you have such confidence in me that you would undertake a vigil to influence me to change my mind," Powell wrote. "My decision, however, is final."
Powell encourage CaShears to "find a new way to challenge your energy in service to the nation."
