It should have been Ed Totten's most joyous day.
His wife, Alison, had given birth to their first child, Mary Elizabeth. Exhausted and exhilarated, Totten was driving his parents home from the hospital when a car swerved into his lane.Now, his mother, Sharon Totten, lies comatose at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. He and his father, Don Totten, suffered broken bones.
The driver of the other car ran.
"He could have killed me, all of us. We're a small family," Totten, 38, said Sunday. "I could have been killed the day my daughter was born."

Alison was in the hospital Thursday, hours after giving birth, when she learned her husband was back - this time, in the emergency room.
