Utah Democratic Party Chairman Mike Zuhl called Wednesday for the resignation of GOP Rep. Enid Greene Wald-holtz, saying illegal campaign contributions led to her 1994 victory over former Democratic Rep. Karen Shepherd.
Zuhl's call follows a similar demand by a national citizen watch-dog group, and Shepherd's 1994 campaign co-chairmen also demanded Waldholtz resign. The embattled congresswoman maintains she won't resign; her spokeswoman says only Democrats, newspaper editors and known opponents of Waldholtz are calling for her resignation.
Zuhl said Democrats have withheld their official response to the "sad story" of Enid and Joe Waldholtz to give her time to explain and to allow her explanation - made Dec. 11 - to sink in.
Now, however, it is clear that Waldholtz won her office unfairly, that she was so distracted by personal business that she's unable to discharge her official duties and that the taint of scandal makes her unable to represent her constituents.
"If she were to resign, a special election could be held quickly. It's done all the time around the country. Enid Wald-holtz must resign immediately," said Zuhl.
