Formal charges were filed Monday against Timpview High School Assistant Principal Jim Campbell in the Provo 4th Circuit Court.

Provo's City Attorney Gary Gregerson filed one charge of Class A misdemeanor theft and one charge of Class B misdemeanor theft against Campbell. If convicted, he could face up to one year in prison.

The charges follow several weeks of police investigation into missing funds at the school.

Campbell is scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. Jan. 2 before a circuit judge after which a plea can be entered and a trial date set.

Campbell is on suspension with pay from the school. He voluntarily checked himself into a psychiatric treatment center last week.

Before he took the Timpview position, Campbell served three years as Utah Education Association president. He resigned that post in April 1990 under a cloud of suspicion over travel and credit card expenses.

Current UEA President Lily Eskelsen said settlement was made between Campbell and the association before he left.

"He paid us a check and that was the end of it," said Eskelsen Monday.
