Thomas Martin, Provo's chief administrative officer since Jan. 1, 1991, recently informed city officials that he has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Martin is on sick leave and will meet with Mayor George Stewart next week to decide how much longer he will remain working for the city. Martin took several weeks off last fall when he began showing symptoms of the illness. In the past few months, however, Martin has worked part time. Before coming to Provo, Martin worked for 18 years in city management in Michigan. For 10 years he served as the city manager of Mt. Pleasant, Mich. He also was city manager of Huntington Woods, Mich., and as assistant city manager of Royal Oak, Mich.

Martin was raised in Washington, but his father grew up in Provo, and the Thomas L. Martin Building at Brigham Young University is named for his grandfather, who served as dean of science for BYU. Martin graduated from BYU with a degree in political science.

Martin oversees city department heads.
