Juab County officials may expand the scope of a special service district to include recreation programs.
Officers of the East Juab Babe Ruth Baseball League want the county to form a recreation special service district and hire a full-time recreation director.County commissioners said similar efforts in the past were defeated by large property owners, such as Utah Power and other businesses, that oppose special taxing districts.
The commissioners said they are considering imposing a state-authorized sales tax on fast food and restaurant operations that can be used for recreation activities. If the county goes that route, it would be at least April before any money would be available. The commissioners said they are also looking at whether a special service district that manages federal in-lieu of taxes money can be expanded to manage recreation funds as well.
