Three Salt Lake County residents were charged Friday with manslaughter after they waited almost 18 hours to report a drug overdose.

The victim, 23-year-old John Barrett, Murray, died because of the delay, court documents said.On Monday, Feb. 20, Alan Bosworth Smith, 42, Murray, Valerie Mackert, 33, Sandy, and Othello Elaine Gerety, 39, were apparently partying with Barrett at a house, 225 E. Biltmore (4315 South), about 10 p.m., said the documents.

Barrett allegedly shot up a mixture of cocaine and heroin before collapsing into seizures, the documents said. After failed attempts at CPR, Smith, Mackert and Gerety placed Barrett into a tub and turned on the shower.

For fear police would find the drugs, the three decided not to call paramedics, said the documents. The three finally called for help about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Rescue crews arrived to find Barrett's body wrapped in a blanket.

Autopsy revealed Barret would have probably survived if the three would have called emergency services immediately after he collapsed. Bail was set at $10,000 each.
