Once again the South is proving dominant at the 1A girls state basketball tournament. Four teams from Region 15 - Enterprise, Piute, Valley and Wayne - reached the quarterfinals after earning sizable first round victories Wednesday at Carbon High School. (The league claimed the top four finishes in last year's tournament.)

Play continues through Saturday.

Enterprise 76, Wendover 20

The second-ranked Wolves had little trouble cashing in on the outmanned Wildcats. Jenny Holt led the way with 14 points and was joined in the scoring column by 13 of her teammates. McKell Williams had 9 for Wendover.

Green River 50, Dugway 46

Gaylene Ecker scored 22 points to lead the Pirates past the Mustangs in the opening round's closest encounter. Dugway's Heidi Bruce also had 22.

Duchesne 39, Waterford 25

Rashelle Nielsen was the lone player to reach double figures as the Eagles knocked off the Wolves. Her 15 points led the way as Duchesne advanced into the second round.

Rowland Hall 68, Whitehorse 41

Alli Miller scored 24 points as the Winged Lions blasted the Raiders. Rowland Hall-St. Mark's outscored Whitehorse 32-10 in the third period in cruising to victory.

Piute 60, Int. Christian 48

Red Poll scored 26 points as the Thunderbirds upset the fourth-ranked Lions. Piute extended a 16-12 halftime edge by outscoring ICS 23-15 in the third period. Katie Hill had 17 for the Lions.

Valley 81, SL Lutheran 37

The top-ranked Buffaloes, two-time defending state champions, blasted the Lynx by building a 71-16 lead after three quarters. Fourteen players scored for Valley.

Wayne 67, Manila 42

Tonya Laing's 21 points paced the Badgers past the Mustangs. Wayne outscored Manila in each of the four quarters to earn the lopsided victory.

Rich 52, Salt Lake Christian 10

The third-ranked Rebels had little trouble with the Dragonslayers. SLC managed just two field goals in the contest. In contrast, 12 different players scored for Rich.
