A Vernal man died when the compact car he was driving struck the rear of semitrailer truck and rolled on U-40 near the Jordanelle dam Friday morning.

Killed was:William D. Turnbow, 44, Vernal.

About 11:20 a.m., Turnbow's westbound car slammed into the back of the semi, driven by LeGrande Dean Gilbert, 35, Richland, according to a Wasatch County sheriff's office press release. Turnbow's car then swerved and rolled once.

Two doctors and a nurse, driving just behind Turnbow, stopped and found he was not breathing, the release said. They applied CPR while awaiting a medical helicopter and paramedics, but Turnbow never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Gilbert was uninjured.
