I totally agree with Lyla Kidman about the need for more schools and not more prisons (Forum Feb. 21). A good education is the best thing we can give our children.

But we need to remedy the current problems in our legal and prison systems. As a society, we must first stop babying the convicts. We have allowed our prisons to become so nice that criminals come back, repeatedly. Why should prisoners be kept in better conditions than those in the real world? As taxpayers, we are paying them to do nothing. They produce little, and on top of that we give them a free education all the way through college. They have a roof over their heads and three good meals a day.

These people have been convicted of various crimes, and they are to pay a debt to society, not kept in luxury. In my view, prisoners should be made to work and repay all debts to their victims and society. Sentences should be carried out in full, and each convict should only be allowed one appeal.

Until we make prisons a terrible place to go, we will continue to have repeat offenders.
