Merger talks between New York City's Joffrey Ballet and Ballet Chicago are under way, but financial problems are undermining the effort and appear to be more severe than previously estimated.

Sources close to the talks said the combined debt of the two companies is close to $2.5 million, not the $1.6 million that officials of the two troupes have publicly maintained.
