Howard Frederick Herzog, a true gentleman, passed away in his Salt Lake home on March 3, 1995, surrounded by family and friends.

Howard was born in Salt Lake City on July 30, 1911 to Alfred and Elizabeth Herzog. One of seven children, he attended West High School and the University of Utah and spent many happy hours on ball fields and courts; his talents were recognized when he was elected as All-Church guard on the LDS basketball team. Howard also enjoyed skiing and was a lifelong avid golfer. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre, and he treasured the lifelong friendships with his Army buddies that grew out of those difficult times. On September 17, 1948, Howard married Jean Rachel Davies in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were devoted to each other, sharing a sense of humor and mutual responsibility that endured for almost half a century. Even though he claimed always to have wanted a boy, he loved his four daughters, Michael-Ann, with whom he shared his passion for sports, Mary Jean (Drew) Parkin, Christine (Kevin) Unander, Julie (Paul) Moore. He also loved his three granddaughters, Tiffany, Melissa, Rachel and his youngest grandchild and first boy in the family, John Howard. Howard worked in the restaurant business and at one time owned three cafes, City Lunch 1,2, and 3. He also worked at the Kennecott Copper Smelter. He started the Evergreen Wedding Reception Center, which he ran as a family business. Howard was loved and admired by his friends and neighbors. He coached church ball teams for many years and served in positions that kept him close to youth and the high spirits that he enjoyed so much. He was appointed by his neighbors as the honorary "Mayor of Craig Drive," and he held this mantle well, always greeting friends with a ready smile and a strong handshake.

Howard is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sister Pearl (Marlin) Parry, and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Funeral services will be held 12 noon, Tuesday, March 7, 1995 at the East Mill Creek 9th Ward Chapel, 3750 So. Hillside Lane (2590 East). Friends may call at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and at the church Tuesday prior to services from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
