Barbara Christian gave out a lot of misinformation about Utah's School Breakfast Bill, HB195 (Forum Feb. 22).

The bill only required that schools evaluate the need for a school breakfast program. If a school breakfast program was not practical, the local board of education could grant a waiver. HB195 in no way abrogated family responsibilities and did not contain language that undermined the family.Gov. Mike Leavitt's Utah Food Assistance Task Force recommended that all schools offer the School Breakfast Program unless given a waiver. Presently, 22,000 elementary-age children in Utah who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches attend schools where breakfast is not available. Many of these children are truly in need. Schools need to evaluate this program and make it available where the need exists.
