Americans John Roethlisberger and Kristy Powell won the men's and women's all-around titles Saturday at the 13th annual McDonald's American Cup gymnastics meet.
Roethlisberger trailed Germany's Valeri Belenki after four events but scored a 9.525 on the parallel bars.Belenki took a nasty fall on the parallel bars and managed just an 8.85, which opened the door for Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger, 24, from Minneapolis, Minn., scored a 9.737 on the horizontal bar to wrap up the title.
He finished with a score of 57.237 to 56.675 for Russia's Dmitri Vasilenko. Rustam Sharipov, from the Ukraine, finished third.
American Bill Roth of Mohegan Lake, N.Y., finished sixth.
Roethlisberger was second in the all-around in the meet last year behind Vitaly Scherbo of Belarus. Scherbo didn't compete this year.
Powell, 15, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was competing in just her second event as a senior gymnast. Her best previous all-around finish was a tie for second at the Golden Sands Invitational in Sofia, Bulgaria, last year as a junior.
Powell edged out Romania's Ana Maria Bican 39.261 to 39.087. Amanda Borden of Cincinnati was third with a score of 38.687.
Powell had the best scores on the uneven bars (9.85), balance beam (9.762) and the floor (9.85).
The meet featured 21 women and 17 men from 16 countries. Individual event awards were handed out Thursday. Roethlisberger and Powell also had the top all-around scores Thursday.
