The only thing pounding harder than the drummer at the R.E.M. concert was the drummer's head.

Bill Berry had to leave the concert in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Wednesday night with a migraine headache. He was hospitalized for observation."He's in good spirits," said Michele Rawson, a spokeswoman for the group's management organization. "The doctors are checking him."

The Lausanne-based Le Matin newspaper said Berry grabbed his head in pain and was taken off stage. Singer Michael Stipe told the audience it was a "bad migraine," the newspaper said. R.E.M. is on an European tour promoting its new album, "Monster."
