Here are answers to some of the most commonly encountered problems with Crossroads software and service. Questions about using the software and service are answered in the online help manual. An interim update of the software will be released shortly.

Question: I hear the dial tone and the modems connect, but then I'm immediately logged off.

Answer: Any of the following may be happening:

- You may have entered your Crossroads account ID incorrectly.

- Only one user per account number can be logged in. If additional users attempt to connect, they will not be able to do so.

- You may have an invalid password. Call Crossroads customer service (237-2176) and ask for help.

- Your modem may not be waiting long enough to establish a connection. Add the following characters to your initialization string: S7=60. This will increase the time the modem waits to establish a connection to 60 seconds.

- You may have connected at the wrong baud rate. Make sure you have set the baud rate in Crossroads to the highest rate supported by your modem (up to 38.4).

Question: Crossroads says it is resetting the modem, then that it is connecting, but I never hear a dial tone, dialing or any handshaking tones.

Answer: You have not selected the correct COM port for the modem, or you have selected an invalid IRQ or I/O address for the port to which the modem is connected. Because of the wide variety of peripherals that use IRQs, it is extremely difficult to troubleshoot these problems. You'll probably need to enlist the help of the business or individual who set up your computer originally.

One quick way to determine if your modem and COM port are talking is to load the Terminal program that comes with all copies of Windows. It is usually found in the Accessories program group. Open Terminal and select Settings/-Communications. Select the COM port to which you think the modem is attached. Click on the "OK" button. Then, in the Terminal screen, type the letter "A" and the letter "T" and press the Enter or Return key. If an "OK" does not appear on the following line, your modem is not connected to that COM port, the COM port is faulty, the modem is faulty, or the wrong IRQ or I/O address is set for that port.
