Lot Smith Camp No. 1 and other camps of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War are attempting to identify sons and daughters of Civil War veterans.
Those sought are living offspring of soldiers and sailors who participated in the conflict and would include descendants of Lot Smith's company of cavalry who served on the frontier for three months in 1862.Individuals, most of whom will be older than 80 years, are being sought so they can be honored with lifetime, honorary membership in the organization. They also will receive a certificate from the group's national commander.
Other descendants, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Civil War veterans, are eligible for regular membership and the affiliated auxiliary, said William R. Ward, Lot Smith Camp commander, who may be contacted at P.O. Box 11592, Salt Lake City, UT 84147-0592, or 801-240-1014.
Lot Smith Camp is the national organization's only camp in Utah, but other camps are making a similar search.
