The city of Ogden is offering a $1,000 reward for the return of a .30-caliber machine gun that was stolen Friday afternoon from the Browning Arms Museum in Union Station.
The gun that belonged to inventor John M. Browning was World War II vintage. It was discovered missing from a space reserved for military weapons in the museum - one of three in the restored station - after the facility closed.
The 80-pound machine gun was not in a display case but was attached by two pins to its tripod, which was bolted to the floor.
The thief slipped the two pins out and then somehow made his way out of the museum toting the 3-foot-long weapon.
Ogden Police Detective Dave Lucas said police interviewed those in the station and inspected packages. Dogs sniffed the building in case the gun was inside, but nothing was found.
The ammo-belt receiver from the machine gun was stolen several years ago.
