I was stunned by Brian Roberts (Forum, Feb. 23) who shamelessly described the police as scummy lowlife. Roberts should have been at my home at 3 a.m. several years ago when we thought we had a prowler. He should have seen the officers from the West Valley Police Department who responded almost instantly to our call; two policemen, hardly more than kids, who descended into our basement with weapons drawn.

He should have seen the fear in their eyes, not knowing what was down there and putting their lives on the line for a family they did not know. Fortunately for us all, there was no prowler, and we were all relieved. The kinds of things Roberts finds offensive can be found almost anywhere. This kind of criticism is unwarranted . . . worse, it's just off the wall. The next time Roberts finds himself facing a situation where some deranged individual wants to take away his property, his safety or his life, let him call a janitor to help. Me, I'll call the cops.
