The National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers is offering 20 $1,000 scholarships to students beginning their freshman or sophomore year in college this fall.
The scholarship program, entitled "Tomorrow's Pioneers," has been set up to honor and assist those students who have overcome significant hardships and are in need of financial support to continue their educations. The hardships can be of any type: physical, mental or emotional. Financial need will also be considered in selecting the recipients of these scholarships. Applicants can be either male or female, and do not need to be a descendant of a Utah pioneer or a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from any high school or high school LDS seminary in Utah County or by contacting Reed Farnsworth at 223-5483. Applications must be received at the Sons of Utah pioneers headquarters by March 30, to be considered. Applicants will be interviewed in early April.
Locally, the Brigham Young and George Albert Smith Chapters of the Sons of Utah Pioneers will be offering two of the scholarships to students from Utah County. Four other Utah County students will also be recognized for their achievements. Scholarship winners and runners-up will each be awarded a one-year membership in the Sons of Utah Pioneers, a one year subscription to Pioneer magazine and a plaque.
The scholarship winners and runners-up will receive their awards at a banquet held in their honor on April 27 in the Sky Room at Brigham Young University.
