Law enforcement officials say a Salt Lake man made two serious mistakes Monday after he allegedly robbed a Wendover bank.
The first - using a white stretch limousine as a get-away car - likely got him caught. The second mistake almost killed him.
Ted Martin Cary, 28, was shot in the shoulder and stomach by a pair of Utah Highway Patrol troopers on I-80 when he reportedly made a quick movement with his hand inside his jacket - revealing a small black object.
"The suspect's sudden actions forced the troopers to make a quick decision," said Tooele County Sheriff Frank Scharmann. Cary was flown to University Hospital, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Monday.
The black object, first thought to be a handgun, was later identified as the suspect's wallet.
Cary was turned over to the FBI Tuesday.
The troopers were placed on administrative leave with pay, standard procedure following any such circumstance. The troopers' names have not been released.
Authorities said a man, clad in a white T-shirt and dirty jeans, walked into the Wendover branch of Key Bank at 10:27 a.m. and gave a note to a teller demanding money. The teller then reportedly handed the man $920.
No weapon was used in the heist, said Scharmann.
Witnesses called police about a half-hour later saying two men were pulling out of a Wendover, Nev., casino in a white limousine.
"The limo was next identified traveling east on I-80 by workers at a port of entry, and they contacted police," said Schar-mann.
Three UHP troopers caught up with the suspects about 35 miles east of Wendover and pulled the limousine over. "The troopers ordered the driver to exit, which he did," said Scharmann. "They then ordered Cary to exit. He did so but held a hand inside his coat. The troopers ordered him to show his hands, but he did not cooperate."
Cary then "made a fast movement," and two of the troopers fired their 9 mm service weapons, according to Scharmann. The driver, whose name was not released, was apprehended by police without incident and taken for questioning. He was later released.
A bundle of cash believed to have been taken from the Wendover bank was recovered at the scene, said Scharmann.
