The message was delivered to Jordan School District Superintendent Ray Whittenburg on a pink slip of paper.

Hearing of the fire that gutted Oquirrh Elementary School in West Jordan, the Ogden School District had dispatched a truck full of instructional materials and teacher supplies to assist the displaced students and staff. The message tipped an exhausted Whit-ten-burg's emotional scales, prompting the customarily reserved school chief to break into tears during Monday evening's emergency school board meeting.

"The graciousness of people is sometimes overwhelming," he said, regaining his composure. "It's just overwhelming."

Whittenburg also announced that each Oquirrh teacher would be adopted by other Jordan District teachers in an "adopt a teacher program."
