WAC honors Roberts, reprimands Stafford
LITTLETON, Colo. - BYU junior center Kenneth Roberts has been named the Western Athletic Conference player of the week for men's basketball.
Roberts, of Riverton, scored a career-high 34 points in BYU's 87-79 loss to Utah. He went 10 for 10 from the free-throw line and made 11 of 15 (73 percent) from the field, including both of his three-point attempts.
Also, WAC commissioner Karl Benson Monday issued a public reprimand to women's basketball players Behka Stafford of BYU and Tanisha Huddleston of Fresno State after reviewing an altercation that occurred during the Feb. 25 BYU-Fresno State game.
U., Y. games on TV
The two local teams' WAC tournament games will be televised by their regular stations - Utah on KUTV-Ch. 2 and BYU on KSL-Ch. 5.
Ch. 5 will telecast BYU's quarterfinal game Thursday at 3 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. Utah's quarterfinal opponent also won't be decided until Wednesday, but the Utes will be playing at 6:30 p.m. on Ch. 2.
Should the Cougars win on Thursday, KSL will carry their Friday semifinal at 6:30 p.m. Should the Utes win, KUTV will air their semifinal at 9 p.m.
Saturday's championship game will be cablecast by ESPN on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Majerus, Van Horn head District 7 list
ALBUQUERQUE - Keith Van Horn of Utah has been named player of the year for District 7 by the United States Basketball Writers Association, and Ute coach Rick Majerus has been named coach of the year.
Besides Van Horn, the All-District 7 Team announced Monday for Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming includes:
Theo Ratliff, Wyoming; Otis Jones, Air Force; Marlow White, New Mexico; Russell Larson, Brigham Young; Kenneth Roberts, Brigham Young; Rodney Walker, New Mexico State; Eric Franson, Utah State; Donnie Boyce, Colorado, and David Evans, Colorado State.
The team was chosen by USBWA members who live in the states that comprise the district.
Utes make AP poll
UCLA remained No. 1 in this week's Associated Press basketball poll, while Utah broke into the Top 25 at No. 22.
