The American flag flies at half-staff Wednesday on Temple Square in honor of President Howard W. Hunter of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Funeral services for President Hunter, who died March 3 in Salt Lake City, were held at noon Wednesday in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. On Tuesday 25,212 people filed past the 87-year-old church leader's casket in the Church Administration Building. The line began forming before dawn, with hundreds of people still standing in line an hour or so before the line closed at 8:10 p.m. The funeral began after publication deadlines for Wednesday's Deseret News. Complete coverage of the funeral will appear in Thursday's Deseret News and in Saturday's Church News section. President Hunter was praised in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who said the church leader " . . . has left an indelible impression for good, forged through many years of service to his church and to humankind in a variety of capacities."
