Strange words coming from Dave Barry: "I'm taking this deadly seriously."

What could be so important to divert the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist from his normally comic ways? His new job as - we are not making this up - a Capitol Hill press aide.Or, as he would prefer, deputy director of communications.

It was only for a day, but Barry wasn't clowning around. He spent Tuesday in the cramped D.C. office of Rep. Steve LaTourette, R-Ohio, hitting the phones to publicize a subcommittee hearing Wednesday.

Why LaTourette? "He invited me," said Barry. Plus, he said, LaTourette's facial hair and three months' experience might qualify him for a national candidacy.
