The state fire marshal does not like Weber State University's plan to use $3.3 million from the Legislature to design and plan an overall renovation of the Val A. Browning Center.

Instead, Lynn Borg wants the university to use the money to fix fire-safety problems now."I think $3.3 million is enough to do most of the fire stuff. That is why they went to the Legislature, to get the money to do that," Lynn Borg said.

"It is a big concern," Borg said. "We have to get going and start to make progress toward correcting the problem there."

Last year, Borg deemed the center one of the worst fire hazards in the state, due mainly to its dead-end corridors and faulty ventilation. He said he would shut it down if it wouldn't be a severe economic blow to WSU and Weber County.

WSU officials say the $3.3 million is about half of what it will take to bring the center into compliance with fire codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
