Southern Utah's men's and women's basketball teams have both laid claim to the top seeds in the upcoming American West Conference tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday in the SUU Centrum.
With a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play, the Thunderbird men (15-11 overall) earned a Friday meeting with Cal Poly SLO, which finished the year at 0-6 in the league and 1-25 overall. Game time is 5:30 p.m.Cal State Northridge claimed the second seed with a 4-2 mark and will face third-seeded Sacramento State (2-4) Friday at 3 p.m. The men's championship will be fought Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Centrum.
Three-time AWC player of the week Sean Allen leads SUU and the conference in scoring with a 15.3 average.
SUU's women, meanwhile, sewed up the No. 1 seed weeks ago with an identical 6-0 league record. The T-Bird women meet fourth-seeded Cal State Northridge in the opening round at 8 p.m.
The Southern Utah women take a 15-9 overall record into the tourney, which includes a current five-game winning streak.
Cherri Frandsen and Myndee Larsen finished the season as the AWC's top two scorers at 16.0 and 14.4 ppg.
