Shut out by the Oscars, "Hoop Dreams" found it easier to score with the Producers Guild of America.

The film's producers - Steve James, Fred Marx and Peter Gilbert - and executive producers Catherine Allan and Gordon Quinn received the guild's Special Award of Merit on Wednesday. The guild doesn't have a category for documentaries, but president Leonard Stern said the awards committee felt "Hoop Dreams" was significant enough to warrant a special award. The critically acclaimed film failed to earn an Academy Award nomination for best documentary or best picture.

The Producers Guild voted "Forrest Gump" best picture and the NBC hospital drama "ER" best series.
