Charles Welle's criticism (Forum, Feb. 26) against the Boy Scouts of America was premature. First, the young man in question was not awarded a fire-safety badge after setting a cat on fire. His safety project was toward his Eagle award while he was a Scout. The incident with the cat happened a few years after he was a Scout.
Second, I agree that this was a cruel act and action should be taken. And yes, unfortunately not all young men who earn their Eagle Scout badge grow up to be perfect individuals (who does?). In today's society, we need more groups like the Scouting program. Please don't judge an entire organization because one former member went astray.Michael McLaughlin
