Brian Nelson, in a letter headlined, "Police are the lowest of losers" (Forum Feb. 23), missed several pertinent points. First, putting on a uniform does not automatically make a saint. Second, every police officer I have known over the years tries very diligently not to allow his work and those situations he works with to overtake who he is and what he stands for as an individual.
When one works with the sewage of humanity, it is difficult not to get smudged from time to time. Not many people are willing to not only put their lives on the line but to work in often degrading, dehumanizing situations on a daily basis. And lastly, while foul language and centerfolds are not hanging offenses, they do diminish the human spirit and tarnish some of the more noble virtues man aspires to. To err is human; to forgive divine. I would hope we would all try to strive for more divinity in our lives and less condemnation.Judy Hanham
