Winning on the soccer field has been no easy task for Granite High as the last four years can attest. In that time the Farmers have an overall record of 3-56. And one win was a forfeit.
Those days could be over if Granite keeps pulling surprises like Friday's 3-2 last-minute win over Murray. Down 2-0 late in the first half, Jim Eakins' Farmer team came back with an intensity unforeseen by the three-year coach."For the first time in a long time this Granite team wants to win and has what it takes to do it," Eakins said. "They know they have the ability. They're determined to get back whenever they're down."
Senior forward Jared Reynolds hit a penalty kick with under two minutes on the clock, giving the Farmers a win and the Region 6 lead with a 2-1 record. Murray came back with three desperation shots on goal, the last being a clutch save by Granite goalkeeper Kip Carmen.
Murray's early lead came halfway through the first as Phil Samanleyo rebounded a cross pass from right wing Peter Griggs. Minutes later Aaron Slivka slammed a shot through the middle for the Spartans' second goal.
With a penalty kick goal by J.D. Barker just before halftime Granite began to fight back. Midfielder Jeremy Morgan then tied the score for the Farmers with a strong blast from the top of the box while Murray continued to have problems finding a clear shot at the post.
