Shopping will still be popular, but for one day this month reading will take precedence at the ZCMI Center.
On April 22, the Capitol Hill Kiwanis Club, Deseret Book, the West High Key Club and the West High Builders Club will sponsor two events aimed at encouraging Utah's elementary school students to read. The fifth annual Kiwanis Book Exchange and "The Day of a Thousand Books" reading marathon will begin at 10 a.m. in the mall's center court.
The book exchange offers a convenient way for people to donate quality books for distribution to more than 500 elementary school libraries throughout the state. Young readers are invited to bring three or more books they have read and loved, and exchange them for a book they want.
Books can be dropped into the book barrel at the ZCMI Center or taken to any Deseret Book store. Donations can be made in the name of a particular elementary school. Cash donations are also encouraged.
Suitable books will go directly to school libraries. Others will be put on sale on the day of the event to raise money to buy additional books for school libraries.
The marathon, sponsored by Deseret Book, will feature fifth-graders from across Utah, who will try to read more than 1,000 books in less than two hours.
