ACCIDENTAL GUNSHOT KILLS SPANISH FORK TEENAGER

An accidental gunshot from a rifle that supposedly was not loaded struck and killed a teenager Monday.

Gerald Patterson, 17, the son of Juan and Gladys Patterson of Spanish Fork, was shot in the upper leg at approximately 1 p.m. and died an hour later at Mountain View Hospital.Three other juveniles were present at the time of the shooting. The .22-caliber rifle fired as one of the young men was putting it down after examining it. Patterson was a junior at Spanish Fork High School.

Investigation is continuing.

Police Chief Dee Rosen-baum said the official cause of death has not been determined. He indicated the teenagers were all friends.
