April is the month volunteers walk their neighborhood for the American Cancer Society in the Annual Community Crusade. Two things are accomplished by this army of more than 16,000 volunteers in the greater Salt Lake area. First, important educational materials are left at every home, and second, those homeowners are asked for a contribution to help the American Cancer Society achieve its vital mission of education, patient service and cancer research.

Unfortunately, we are finding many homes have already given to another cancer group and mailed their check out of the state. Make sure you are giving to an approved charity that meets all the standards of the two top charity-rating agencies, the National Charities Information Bureau (1-212-929-6300) and the Council of Better Business Bureaus (1-703-276-7500).These organizations set standards for ethical promotion and fund-raising, financial accountability and disclosure, responsible governing bodies, expenses, and purposes and programs.
