DESIGN OF ONE UTAH CENTER YIELDS TECHNOLOGY AWARD

Thomas D. Colvin, president of Colvin Engineering Associates Inc., was recently presented a Technology Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers for design of mechanical systems for One Utah Center.

The Atlanta-based society said Colvin's design, among other things, saves nearly $160,000 annually in energy costs.Innovative features of the project include a two-stage evaporative cooling system that meets 80 percent of the building's cooling needs without using the chillers.

Also, a thermal storage system was installed that produces chilled water when electric rates are lowest and stores it for use to meet daytime air conditioning needs.
