TANKER LOSES ITS LETTUCE, SPILLS FUEL INTO CREEK

A lettuce-laden tanker rolled Wednesday morning on I-80 near the mouth of Parleys Canyon, closing area traffic and spilling 200 gallons of diesel fuel into Parleys Creek.

More than 30,000 heads of lettuce were ruined in the accident. The price of the leafy garnishment has skyrocketed to $2 per head, or more. Produce managers say harsh weather in January and California floods are driving the increases.Fuel from the truck flowed into the pond at Sugarhouse Park at 700 E. 2100 South, where it was contained by hazardous material crews, according to Salt Lake Fire Capt. Jeff Stansfield.

A private excavation company is expected to clean up the mess at the crash site and the pond. Officials said the on-ramp to I-215 would be closed until late Thursday while crews repaired damage.

The truck's driver, Slawomir Spellic, was not injured.
