Brent Peterson, a sexton at the Cathedral of the Madeleine bears a wooden cross as he leads hundreds in the annual ecumenical Good Friday procession in Salt Lake City. Christians, ranging from toddlers to teenagers to senior citizens and joiined by a pair of basset hounds, accompanied religious leaders of participating churches Friday night outside downtown's majestic Cathedral of the Madeleine to begin the event. Each church was represented by a tall, colorful banner carried by parishioners in the procession. The procession, which served participants with an occasion to make a public witness to their faith, paused solemnly at several downtown churches to read scriptures, sing hymns and pray in remembrance of Christ's crucifixion. It concluded at the First Presbyterian Church. The procession was sponsored by the Central Salt Lake Council of Churches.
