HEART PATIENT'S CONDITION IMPROVES

The condition of the anonymous Idaho grandfather who received an artificial heart Wednesday was upgraded Saturday to serious but stable, an LDS Hospital nursing supervisor said.

The 56-year-old patient, whose family requested the hospital not release his name, was resting.Wednesday, the CardioWest C-70 device was placed in his chest during a four-hour operation.

He is the first patient to receive an artificial heart in Utah since Barney Clark in 1982 was the first-ever artificial-heart recipient.
