BINGHAM GOES PAST ALTA IN 5A BASEBALL CHASE

A closer look at this week's Deseret News high school sports rankings:

Baseball

Only three new teams - Brighton, Emery and Juab - managed to crack spots in this week's Spring Break version of the rankings, while the Bingham Miners (7-2)overtook the Alta Hawks on top of the 5A ranks with a No. 1 billing.

By virtue of an impressive 3-2 victory over then-No. 1 Alta, the Brighton Bengals (9-5) entered the 5A poll for the first time this season at No. 5. Meanwhile, Alta (9-4) dropped just one spot to No. 2.

Things remained the same in the 4A classification, while Emery fought its way back into the fifth spot in 3A as Richfield exited.

The biggest change was in 2A as Kanab, which lost for the first time this season, dropped a spot to No. 3 with Grand jumping to take the second position. Fifth-ranked Juab (9-6) made its first entry into the rankings.

Manti (12-0) remains the only unscathed team in all classifications.

Boys soccer

One day after suffering its first region loss to Roy, third-ranked Clearfield found quick redemption with a 3-1 win over the Royals Wednesday. With the loss to the Royals, the Falcons drop one notch from last week's No. 2 position in 5A.

That leaves a vacancy open to the climbing Hillcrest squad. Although top-ranked Viewmont stays at No. 1, the Huskies are shaping into the state's surprise team. Led by goalkeeper Zane Davis, Hillcrest still posts the only undefeated record in 5A (6-0-1).

Despite suffering its first region loss to Snow Canyon, the Dixie Flyers remain atop in Class 3A. Since regions 9 and 10 both settle tie games without shootouts, finding a solid No. 1 team may not happen until the state playoffs.

Softball

For the second-straight week, another team has taken over the top ranking in its classification. The Manti Templars became the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A as Grand fell on hard times, losing three games this week and dropping to the No. 3 spot. San Juan moved into the No. 2 position.

Only Fremont in Class 5A became the newest ranked team in the state. The Silver Wolves leaped into the No. 4 spot after dumping previously-ranked Bonneville during the week and claiming first place in Region 1.

All of the other top-ranked teams, Bingham, Box Elder and Carbon, kept hold of their No. 1 rankings. The only other team moving up in the rankings this week was Springville in Class 4A. The Red Devils won the Ice Breaker Tournament in Ephraim last weekend to earn at No. 4 ranking, while dropping Region 8 foe Pleasant Grove to No. 5.
