GRASS NOT IDEAL UNDER SWINGS

Grass is not recommended as a ground cover for children's backyard swings, according to an expert.

"Ground cover should be softer to absorb the shock of a child's landing," says Paul Taccini, executive vice president of Hedstrom Corp., which manufactures swing sets. "We recommend ground covers that are made of wood chips, mulch, sand, pea gravel, or a rubberized safety surface."Once a swing is securely anchored and a recommended ground cover added for safety, shrubbery and plantings can be landscaped into the setting.
