Quick action by bank employees and Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs led to the capture of a bank robber just a block from the bank.
About 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, a man walked into First Security Bank, 4636 Sycamore (2000 East), and handed a teller a note demanding money, said sheriff's spokesman Rod Norton. The teller gave the man money, and the man ran out of the bank's north doors. Two bank employees followed the bandit until he flashed a gun at them, Norton said.
"They backed off," Norton said.
Deputy sheriffs were in the area looking for several accomplices in an earlier robbery at a nearby Burger King Restaurant. Sgt. Mike Parr, who heads the sheriff's robbery division, was in the area within minutes of the robbery.
Parr and several other deputies found the robber hiding in a ditch just a block from the bank. He still had the money and the gun, which turned out to be a toy, Norton said.
