A three-vehicle accident on I-15 killed one person and sent three others to the hospital Saturday night.

Killed was:Richard Nelson, 18, Lehi.

At 7 p.m., a truck and two cars were northbound on I-15 approaching Linden at a high rate of speed when the driver of the lead car apparently spotted a Utah Highway Patrol car in the median and abruptly slowed down, said Trooper Steve Pelton.

The middle vehicle, a small pickup truck, driven by Nelson, swerved to avoid the slowing car and slammed into the third car, driven by George Dunn, 24, Lehi, causing both vehicles to flip over and roll down the freeway embankment, Pelton said.

Nelson and his passenger, Gary Turner, 19, Orem, were thrown from the truck. Nelson died at the scene, and Turner was transported to American Fork Hospital where he remained in critical condition Saturday night.

Dunn was transported to Utah Valley Hospital with neck and back injuries. His passenger, Matt Wilman, age unknown, escaped with minor injuries. Wilman was the only one wearing a seatbelt.
