Utah

Softball team sweeps

Sophomore pitchers Ali Andrus and Monica Jimenez allowed just one unearned run each and catcher Pam McKissick went 3-for-6 at the plate to lead the University of Utah softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Southern Utah.

Playing before an overflow crowd at Ute Field, Utah won both games by 2-1 scores. Utah is 5-1 in the WAC and 14-11 overall. SUU dropped to 0-6 in WAC play and 4-22-1 overall.

Two SUU errors in the fifth inning allowed Utah to score two runs to win the opener. Andrus, a second-team All-American last year, improved her record to 8-7 with a 3-hit, 8-strikeout effort. In the second game, Jimenez hurled a 2-hitter and struck out 6.

AFA comes to Ute Field

The University of Utah baseball team will open it's home season Monday and Tuesday with a three-game series against Air Force. Monday the two teams will square off in a double-header begining at noon and then finish the series off with a single game Tuesday at noon. All three games will be held on Ute field just south of the Medical Towers Apartments on upper campus. The Utes go into the games with a 6-15 record overall and a 0-3 mark in Western Athletic Conference play.

BYU

Cougars topple Air Force

PROVO - Jeff Bills' three-run homer in the fourth inning broke open a tight game and lifted BYU to an 11-4 victory Saturday over the Air Force Academy. D.G. Nelson added a two-run blast for the Cougars in the eighth inning.

The victory completed a three-game sweep to improve the Cougars' eastern division WAC mark to 8-1 and overall record to 20-16-1. Air Force falls to 2-4 in the WAC and 15-9 overall. The Cougars next host Regis College in a three-game nonconference series beginning Friday.

Volleyball team tops USC

LOS ANGELES - Scott Larkin had 29 kills and 20 digs Friday night as the 8th-ranked BYU men's volleyball team defeated the University of Souther California, 17-16, 16-14, 11-15 and 15-11. Larkin also had 22 kills in 28 attempts Thursday night in a victory over Loyola Marymount.

Kevin Hambly, the nation's leader in blocking, had 10 blocks at LMU and 14 against USC. Jesse Gant, the only setter among the national blocking leaders, had 10 blocks against the Trojans.

BYU is 9-7 overall and 8-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. USC fell to 8-9 overall and 5-9 in the league.

Weber State

Golfers 7th in tourney

Weber State finished seventh at the 21st Annual Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Invitational. San Jose State won with a 54 hole total of 863 (one under par), a tournament record.

The Wildcats were led by Andrew Smeeth (senior, Mapleridge, British Columbia) and Chris Dyson (senior, Yorkshire, England) who finished at 223, seven over par.

Assistant AD named

LOGAN - Jerry Bovee, who has served as director of marketing and promotions at Utah State University for the last four years, will be elevated to the position of assistant athletic director effective July 1. USU Athletic Director Chuck Bell announced the promotion Saturday.

Bovee, 27, graduated from USU in 1992 with a degree in finance.

Southern Utah

T-Birds fall

The Southern Utah University baseball team dropped 8-2 and 3-2 games to UC Riverside Saturday at Thunderbird Field. The losses drop SUU to 6-28 for the year. Cam Pentland pitched well in the 3-2 loss, giving up just five hits.
