PANEL OKS FORMULA TO ASSIST SCHOOLS

The Legislature's Education Interim Committee gave its nod Wednesday to a formula to distribute $4 million among Utah's highly impacted schools.

The formula considers the number of students from low-income families, are members of ethnic minorities, have limited English proficiency, come from single-parent households and schools with a high degree of student mobility. The formula, tentatively approved by the Utah State Board of Education, measures cumulative impact of the five factors.

The intent of the reform, the brainchild of Gov. Mike Leavitt, is to provide more professional staff to give at-risk students more individual attention.
