Nissen Award winner Josh Stein was steady throughout in leading Stanford to its third NCAA men's gymnastics team title in the last four years Friday night.
Stanford finished with 232.4 points, 3.4 more than it earned in any previous competition this year, to win the championship of the 53rd nationals at Ohio State's St. John Arena.Defending champion Nebraska also picked up its highest total of the season, 231.55 points, to finish second. The Cornhuskers have finished first or second in 15 of the last 16 championships.
Penn State, making its first appearance in the finals since 1991, was third with 229.775 points.
Stanford led through all six rotations. In a scoring comparison by event, Stanford beat Nebraska by .275 in the floor exercise, .625 on the pommel horse, .325 on the vault and .175 on the high bar.
