Police investigators have concluded that a 7-year-old Provo girl died Saturday afternoon because of a self-inflicted, accidental strangulation.
Brenna Lyn Bastian had been playing with some other children but was evidently alone in her bedroom shortly before 2:30 p.m., when the incident occurred. Bastian had a belt tied around her neck and was swinging from a bedpost on a bunk bed when she lost consciousness, said Provo police detective Gary Hodson, adding that she may have been unable to call for help because she had the belt around her neck. The girl's mother, who had been visiting with a friend downstairs, checked on her and immediately began resuscitation efforts, said Hodson, who investigated the incident. Police and fire crews arrived at the home minutes after being contacted. Their efforts failed to revive the girl.
Bastian was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo by Provo Fire Department paramedics and was pronounced dead on arrival due to strangulation.
